Capricorn Technologies Helps Preserve Today’s Materials for Tomorrow’s Citizens
Leading provider of low-cost, power efficient data storage is the platform of choice for Stanford-initiated CLOCKSS Data Preservation Project

San Francisco, California, September 26, 2006 – Capricorn Technologies, leading the next data storage revolution by supplying low-cost, low-maintenance and low-power-consuming data storage systems, today announced that its’ PetaBox technology has been selected as the platform of choice for the CLOCKSS (Controlled Lots Of Copies Keep Stuff Safe) community-based initiative to build a trusted distributed dark archive designed to protect online scholarly content from catastrophic events and other long-term interruptions.

CLOCKSS is a collaboration between member libraries and publishers. Current member libraries include Indiana University, New York Public Library, OCLC - Online Computer Library Center, Rice University, Stanford University, University of Edinburgh, and University of Virginia.

“The single greatest threat to materials being preserved over the long term is money,” states Victoria Reich, Director of the LOCKSS Program, Stanford University Libraries. “Societies will have good times and bad. Keeping content safe must be a marginal expense in order to decrease the threats during bad times and to maximize available funds for new acquisitions during good times. Until we discovered Capricorn, entry costs for our massive digital preservation project were prohibitive. Thanks to their low-entry price and low overall maintenance costs, we have been able to proceed with our plans for housing massive datastores in various locations on a very limited budget.”

“The CLOCKSS initiative is being undertaken by a not-for profit community partnership with the critical mission of long-term storage of scholarly content in a dark archive,” remarks CR Saikley, Founder and CEO of Capricorn Technologies. “Together these factors make Capricorn’s low-power storage platform an ideal technology choice. Our low entry price and low operating expense facilitate a more comprehensive archive with a greater degree of replication than would otherwise be possible.”

About the PetaBox
PetaBox storage units are 1U systems designed to provide high storage density with minimal power dissipation. By carefully managing the power budget, operating temperatures are reduced and reliability is optimized, while operating costs, cooling requirements, and maintenance overhead are minimized. Together with the PetaBox’ economical entry point of well under $1.50 USD/GB, these features yield the lowest Total Cost of Ownership of any data storage solution available today.
