Capricorn Technologies Spins Off from the Internet Archive
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
San Francisco, CA, July 1, 2004 – The Internet Archive has announced the spinoff
of Capricorn Technologies as a separate, commercial entity.
Capricorn designs, develops, and manufactures large-scale storage
systems for enterprise, scientific, and archival applications.
Capricorn Technologies traces its roots to the development of the
PetaBox at the Internet Archive. “We developed our own storage
solutions at the Archive because there was nothing available that
achieved what we knew was possible,’ said C.R. Saikley, President
and CEO of Capricorn. “Now we are uniquely positioned to offer
these solutions commercially.”
Capricorn Technologies’ initial product offerings will focus on
ATA-based storage products. Capricorn’s ability to provide
high-density storage solutions with very low power consumption
results in highly-reliable systems with the lowest possible total
cost of ownership.
“We are delighted to launch Capricorn Technologies to build on the
open-source technologies developed at the Internet Archive”, said
Internet Archive founder Brewster Kahle. “We look forward to being
a customer of this exciting new venture.”
About the Internet Archive
The Internet Archive is a 501(c)(3) public nonprofit that was
founded to build an ‘Internet library,’ with the purpose of
offering permanent access for researchers, historians, and scholars
to historical collections that exist in digital format. Founded in
1996 and located in the Presidio of San Francisco, the Archive has
been receiving data donations from Alexa Internet and others. In
late 1999, the organization started to grow to include more
well-rounded collections. Now the Internet Archive includes texts,
audio, moving images, and software as well as archived web pages in
our collections.
