But do not panic! In this article, we focus on the functionality of each of the lawnmowers that you can find on the market and tell you which one is best suited to your needs.

Before we tackle the different types of lawnmowers, let’s get back to some basic concepts…

Types of Lawn Mowers

Push Lawn Mower

The push lawn mower is the oldest type of mower. There are 2 types of push mower: manual or motorized

  • The manual push mower

Rustic and simple, the driver pushes the machine in front of him, the wheels turning under the thrust, cause the blades to rotate.

The manual push mower was the first commercially available lawn mower model. Since then, the push mower has been motorized, but it is always the driver who pushes the machine.

  • The motorized push mower

In the powered mower, a motor is used to drive the blade; the walking driver pushes the mower in front of it.

Self-Propelled Lawn Mower

The engine on a mower turns the blade, why would not it advance the mower? This is the self-propelled lawnmower.

It is certain that a thermal or electric motor on a mower increases its weight. If this engine also provides propulsion, this disadvantage becomes an advantage.

The self-propelled mower ensures its own propulsion. No need to push it, it advances alone under your control:

Mulching Lawn Mower

Mulching is a process of multiple grinding of grass cut by the lawn mower. It reduces the grass blades to fine particles during mowing and thus prevents the grass from being picked up.

Mulching comes in the form of a lawnmower equipment that produces fine chopping of the cut grass, reducing it to small particles that fall to the ground and enrich it as a compost.

Side-Discharge Lawn Mower

This type of lawn mower allows you to easily maintain your lawn for a trim and tidy appearance. Discharge of the grass towards the sides either at the back (ideal for empaillage or mulching)

Bagging Lawn Mower

With bagging lawn mower, you will have more time to take care of your garden by trimming down the time to empty the basket of grass.

Zero Turn Radius Lawn Mower

The steering system with zero turning radius makes it possible to turn on the spot. The individual hydraulic wheel drive allows you to maneuver your lawnmower with precise zero turns and allows it to rotate around its own axis without forgetting the turning radius and the untouched areas.

Electric Start Lawn Mower

The electric start lawnmower makes garden maintenance much easier. It is equipped with a practical and quick electric ignition which makes it an ergonomic and effective mower.

Riding Lawn Mower

Beyond a certain area of ground, mowing the lawn becomes a long and tiring exercise. A powerful motor allows large mowing and allows you to sit on the machine: the riding mower.

Good to know: A riding lawnmower is a type of land motor vehicle. It must therefore be insured with at least vehicle civil liability.

Robotic Lawn Mower

The Robotic Lawn Mower (or mowing robot) is responsible for mowing the grass by walking the lawn at its own pace. Programmed to recognize your terrain, you will set limits for it by burying a control wire around the lawn.

Power Sources

Corded Electric Lawn Mower:

They are very well suited for surfaces up to 500 m². They are simple to use, lightweight, low noise (compared to a thermal mower, or even lower) and do not cause start-up problems. For these reasons, the electric mower is preferred for small surfaces. The disadvantage is that you need to be able to handle the wire, which in some cases can be a bit tedious (for example if your land is long or if you have a lot of lakes to bypass) Also to avoid cutting the wire with the mower itself.

These are the most powerful and effective mowers, they are strongly advised from 500 m² of ground, although they can also be used for smaller surfaces, besides in this case, You will opt for a thrust thermal mower. For medium surfaces, you will opt for a towed thermal mower and finally for a riding mower for very large surfaces. Most thermal mowers are now equipped with 4-stroke engines, to make it simple, engines consuming 95/98 lead-free, you will also find on the market, but more rarely anyway, thermal mowers equipped with motors 2 times, ie engines feeding on a mixture of gasoline and oil. If you opt for a lawnmower, be aware that it requires annual maintenance, unlike the electric mower that does not ask for it.

These mowers are just as powerful as electric and thermal lawnmowers, except that they work on battery. Their autonomy being limited, they are still quite marginal on the market, yet if one does its calculations, opting for a battery – which may seem expensive at first – is soon much more profitable than having to fill up with its lawnmower with gasoline.

This mower is mainly used for flat and small areas. It has a helical blade, is devoid of motor and therefore works silently with the strength of your body. It is virtually maintenance-free, easy to handle and store. Nevertheless it does not have any pickup system, cannot cut tall grasses and spoils the lawn when the soil is damp.

It is a material that is ecological, inexpensive and that is made for small areas not exceeding 300 m².

Common Lawn Mower Problems & Simple Solutions

The throttle control constantly sticks

  • Grease the throttle cable
  • Keep the throttle control of your lawn mower lubricated to allow your mower to operate properly.
  • Turn off the mower motor and park it on a flat surface.
  • Pull the throttle control lever fully open. Spray WD-40 into the cable, gas, between the cable and its plastic sheath.
  • Stir the lever to allow dispensing of the lubricant.

Grass blocks my lawnmower

  • Avoid obstructions with cooking oil
  • If you have a petrol or electric mower, the wet or long grass will get caught between the blades and the mower body.
  • Clean the grass underneath the tray with a stick. It may be more difficult to remove when dry.
  • Spray the underside of the tray with lubricant, preferably a non-stick spray, but vegetable oil will do the trick. This will prevent the grass from sticking underneath the mower the next time.

Your gas mower does not cut the grass evenly

  • Keep it parallel to the ground
  • If your lawn looks uneven after mowing it, or if you regularly make holes in the lawn, your lawnmower may be misaligned.
  • Make sure your mower is level. Use a ruler to measure the distance between the bottom of the metal body (or tray) of the mower and the deck (or other level surface) at each corner. Most lawnmowers, whether electric or gasoline, have a height adjustment lever on each wheel to allow you to lift or lower the mower body at each corner until it is level.
  • Make sure the blades are sharp and balanced.
  • Slow down your mower to improve the quality of the cut.

Your air cushion mower does not mow

  • Clean and tilt to float
  • Air cushion mowers make working on your lawn easier because of a fan that lifts the surface tray. But if your lawnmower does not rise as it should, try the following solutions.
  • With the mower unplugged as a safety precaution, clean the grass underneath the tray, especially around the fan blades that are mounted just above the blade.
  • Slightly tilt the tray forward by starting the mower to allow air to circulate in the space between the tray and the floor.

Safety tips for working with a lawnmower

  • When mowing, use gloves, work trousers, goggles and closed shoes;
  • Before mowing, remove any obstructions that may hinder you and check that the mower is in good working order;
  • When mowing, keep children and pets away. Work at the perpendicular to the slope direction. Never put your hands on the blade, even if the mower stalls. Do not mow backwards;
  • After mowing, remember to empty the tray of your machine, clean it and store it out of the reach of children.

A well-maintained lawn mower will last for many years and will save you money in repair or replacement costs.

Before mowing your lawn, carefully check for stones or hard objects on your lawn and remove them. They could seriously damage the blades of your mower.

After mowing your lawn, remember to clean the underside of the tray to remove the grass and prevent rust. Wear a pair of thick gloves to protect your hands from the blades.

Store all your tools dry in a hangar or garage to avoid corrosion.

Always drain the fuel from your mower at the end of the cutting season.
